Port Kembla Energy Terminal Secured with Intrepid Detection Technology

Perimeter Systems Australia is proud to have contributed to the protection of the Port Kembla Energy Terminal, a major energy infrastructure project supporting Australia’s growing energy needs. Our Intrepid perimeter detection technology played a central role in the integrated security solution delivered by Comtex Security and Defence for Squadron Energy.

Project Overview

In 2022, Squadron Energy engaged Comtex Security and Defence to design and implement a complete electronic security system for the Port Kembla Energy Terminal. A critical requirement of the project was securing the terminal’s 700-metre perimeter with a solution capable of delivering precise detection with minimal false alarms.

Comtex selected Perimeter Systems Australia to supply the perimeter detection technology based on our reputation for delivering high-accuracy, reliable security systems suited to hazardous and critical facilities.

Intrepid Perimeter Detection System

The Intrepid detection system, supplied and supported locally by Perimeter Systems Australia, was installed to provide complete boundary protection. Using Power over Ethernet technology, Intrepid accurately detects and pinpoints intrusions along the perimeter with a location precision of approximately one metre. Its advanced algorithms intelligently filter out environmental factors such as weather or authorised vehicle movement, ensuring that only genuine threats trigger an alarm.

Integration into the wider site security network was a key feature of the project. Intrepid was fully integrated with Inner Range’s Integriti security management platform. When an intrusion is detected, Integriti processes the alarm and triggers Hanwha 4K PTZ cameras positioned around the perimeter. These cameras, managed through Milestone XProtect software running on a Moxa industrial network, use built-in AI to automatically track and record intrusions in real time.

Jason Fitzmaurice from Comtex Security and Defence confirmed that Squadron Energy was particularly impressed with the accuracy of the Intrepid system and its seamless integration across the broader security solution.

Broader System Integration

Alongside the Intrepid detection system, the security infrastructure at Port Kembla included:

• Hanwha 4K PTZ surveillance cameras

• Milestone XProtect CCTV management software

• Moxa industrial network infrastructure

• Aiphone IX access control systems

• Eaton Sonix public address and general alarm systems

The complete system allows full remote monitoring, access control, safety alert activation, and two-way communication with the site’s SCADA network. These elements work together to provide an integrated and highly responsive security environment.
